1. Purpose
The American Journal of Advanced Technology and Engineering Solutions (AJATES) is committed to maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of the scholarly record.
AJATES recognizes that published content may occasionally require correction, clarification, addition, withdrawal, or retraction after publication. This Crossmark Update Policy explains how AJATES manages significant post-publication changes and how readers can identify the current status of published content.
AJATES participates in Crossmark, a Crossref service that provides readers with a standard way to identify whether significant changes have been made to published scholarly content.
By clicking the Crossmark button on an AJATES article, readers can access information about the current status of the article and any significant post-publication updates that have been registered.
2. Editorial and Peer-Review Policies
AJATES follows established editorial and peer-review procedures before scholarly content is published.
Manuscripts are evaluated according to the journal's editorial policies, scope, peer-review procedures, publication ethics requirements, and author guidelines.
The journal may consult editors, reviewers, authors, institutions, or other appropriate parties when investigating concerns relating to published content.
The journal's editorial and publication policies are available through the AJATES website.
3. Post-Publication Updates
AJATES maintains the published scholarly record after publication.
When a significant error, omission, ethical concern, or other issue is identified in a published work, the journal will assess the matter and determine whether an editorial update is required.
Depending on the circumstances, a published work may be associated with one or more of the following:
- Correction
- Corrigendum
- Erratum
- Clarification
- Addendum
- Expression of Concern
- Retraction
- Partial Retraction
- Withdrawal
- Removal
- New Version
- New Edition
The type of update will depend on the nature and significance of the issue.
Minor typographical, spelling, formatting, or presentation errors that do not affect the interpretation, accuracy, authorship, citation, or scholarly integrity of the work may be corrected directly without issuing a formal post-publication notice.
4. Corrections
A correction may be published when an error in a published work affects its accuracy or interpretation but does not invalidate the work as a whole.
When a formal correction is necessary, AJATES will publish a correction notice that identifies the affected publication and describes the correction as appropriate.
The correction notice will be linked electronically to the original article, and the relationship between the original article and the correction will be reflected in the relevant metadata where applicable.
The original article will normally remain part of the scholarly record.
5. Errata and Corrigenda
An erratum may be issued to correct an error introduced during the editorial, production, or publication process.
A corrigendum may be issued when an author identifies a substantive error in the published work that requires correction.
Where appropriate, AJATES will publish the relevant notice and establish a link between the notice and the original article.
6. Clarifications and Addenda
AJATES may publish a clarification when additional explanation is required to prevent misunderstanding of information contained in a published work.
An addendum may be published when additional information becomes available after publication and that information is relevant to the understanding, interpretation, or use of the original work.
Where applicable, the clarification or addendum will be linked to the original publication.
7. Expression of Concern
AJATES may publish an Expression of Concern when a potentially serious problem relating to a published work has been identified but the available evidence is not yet sufficient to determine whether correction, retraction, or another action is required.
An Expression of Concern serves to alert readers that the status or reliability of the publication is under investigation.
If the investigation subsequently results in a correction, retraction, withdrawal, or another editorial action, the appropriate notice will be published and linked to the affected work.
8. Retractions
AJATES may retract a published work when there is substantial evidence that the publication contains serious problems affecting its reliability or integrity.
Reasons for retraction may include, but are not limited to:
- Major errors that invalidate the findings or conclusions;
- Fabrication or falsification of data;
- Plagiarism or substantial unattributed use of another person's work;
- Serious research or publication misconduct;
- Duplicate or redundant publication;
- Unethical research practices;
- Significant authorship or contribution problems;
- Manipulation of the peer-review or publication process; or
- Other circumstances that substantially compromise the reliability or integrity of the published work.
When a work is retracted, AJATES will publish a retraction notice identifying the affected publication and explaining the reason for the retraction to the extent appropriate.
The original publication will normally remain accessible as part of the scholarly record, but its retracted status will be clearly identified.
The retraction and its relationship to the original publication will be reflected in Crossref metadata where applicable.
9. Withdrawal and Removal
In exceptional circumstances, a published work may need to be withdrawn or removed from public access.
Such action may be considered where continued public availability creates significant legal, ethical, privacy, security, or other exceptional concerns.
When withdrawal or removal is necessary, AJATES will provide an appropriate notice explaining the status of the publication to the extent permitted by applicable legal and ethical requirements.
Whenever possible, AJATES will preserve an appropriate bibliographic record of the publication and clearly indicate its status.
10. Permanency of Published Content
AJATES considers published scholarly content to be part of the permanent scholarly record.
The journal will not normally delete or silently replace a published article when a significant post-publication issue is identified.
Instead, where appropriate, AJATES will publish a separate correction, clarification, expression of concern, retraction, withdrawal, or other update notice and establish an electronic relationship between the original publication and the subsequent notice.
This approach is intended to maintain transparency and allow readers to understand the publication history of the work.
11. Reporting Potential Problems
Readers, authors, reviewers, editors, researchers, and other members of the scholarly community may report potential problems concerning content published by AJATES.
Reports may relate to, among other matters:
- Suspected plagiarism;
- Fabrication or falsification of data;
- Duplicate publication;
- Significant errors;
- Authorship or contribution concerns;
- Conflicts of interest;
- Research ethics concerns;
- Peer-review concerns; or
- Other issues that may affect the reliability or integrity of published content.
Reports should provide sufficient information and supporting evidence to allow the journal to assess the concern.
AJATES will review credible concerns and, where appropriate, conduct an editorial investigation.
The journal may contact authors, reviewers, editors, institutions, or other relevant parties when necessary.
12. Crossmark and Article Status
AJATES uses Crossmark to help readers identify the current status of published content.
The Crossmark button provides a standard way for readers to determine whether significant changes have been made to an article after publication.
Where applicable, Crossmark information may identify:
- Corrections;
- Retractions;
- Withdrawals;
- Expressions of Concern;
- Other significant post-publication updates; and
- Additional information registered by AJATES with Crossref.
The presence of a Crossmark button does not by itself guarantee that an article has never been changed. Readers should use the Crossmark information and any linked notices to determine the current status of the publication.
13. Crossref Metadata and Post-Publication Updates
AJATES will make reasonable efforts to maintain accurate Crossref metadata for its published content.
When a significant post-publication update is issued, the journal will register the relevant update metadata with Crossref where applicable.
The DOI of the original publication and the DOI of the update notice will be linked through appropriate Crossref relationships when required.
Significant updates may include corrections, corrigenda, errata, clarifications, addenda, expressions of concern, partial retractions, retractions, withdrawals, removals, new versions, and other recognized update types.
Minor changes that do not affect the scholarly meaning, citation, authorship, or interpretation of a publication may not require a separate Crossref update record.
14. Article Versions
When a significant change requires a new version or separate publication notice, AJATES will seek to preserve the relationship between the original work and the updated record.
Where appropriate, the original DOI will remain associated with the original publication, while a separate DOI may be assigned to the correction, update, or new version.
Readers will be directed to the relevant update information through the article webpage, Crossmark, and/or Crossref metadata as applicable.
